The omicron COVID-19 variant has cast some uncertainty over markets, which spells opportunity for investors, according to ST Wong, Chief Investment Officer of Prime Value Asset Management.
“Uncertainty in markets is not risk. Uncertainty creates opportunity through volatility, which produces great entry points into great companies.”
While there might be some worrying moments as markets react to news, ST says it’s important to cut through the noise. “It’s essential to keep a focus on the long-term. Once you focus on the short-term, your ability to make mistakes compounds.
“The main thing is to focus on the investment approach to identify quality businesses with sound management, financial strength, and attractive valuations.
“This approach creates an investment portfolio of stocks which is very different from the market.”
ST said Prime Value Asset Management had a team approach where different portfolio managers collaborate and cross-pollinate ideas. “Working as a team gives us some edge. We all have a similar objective.
“As portfolio managers, we aren’t precious about ideas or stocks – there’s a desire to collaborate and share ideas which makes us much stronger collectively. It makes all of our funds better.”
The team’s key focus is minimising mistakes and protecting capital. “Choosing quality companies with good management and strong financial strength, at a good price, is where capital protection starts.
“Successful companies during times of disruption learn rapidly, and translate that into experimentation and action. Management needs to be flexible and adapt.
“As investors, we need to be flexible to stay ahead of the market, by taking advantage of changes in the cycle.”
ST Wong manages the Prime Value Opportunities Fund, which has delivered investors 11.7% per annum net of fees since inception in 2012 (performance to 30 November 2021), outperforming the market.
